It became a story last week that Karen Pence, the wife of vice president Mike Pence is teaching art classes at a private school in Virginia that holds to Biblical values and expects students and staff to abide by a code of conduct which comports with Biblical teachings. This has drawn criticism because Immanuel Christian School, where Pence teaches, has a policy banning LGBT expressions or relationships. (more…)

Bible classes and public schools
Indiana, Missouri, North Dakota, Virginia, West Virginia, and Florida all have proposed laws which would either compel or encourage schools to offer elective classes on the Bible.No book has influenced America and western civilization as much as the Bible. It is foundational to our laws, ethics, and worldview. It’s references and allusions in film, literature and art are innumerable. The Bible influences our language. Can a person truly have faith if their life doesn’t show it?
Vegans.
When you’re a vegan, you don’t eat meat or use animal products. Being vegan is a lifestyle.
Now if I said that I was vegan and invited you over to my place for dinner, and you said what are we having “surt and turt….we’re having some fish and steak” and then I was washing it down with a glass of milk, and my kitchen table was on a bearskin rug, and I was eating the meal with ivory handled silverware while wearing a fur coat, and we were facing my trophy wall that had deer heads….” You might start to think “you’re not vegan.”

Doing ministry with an “all things to all people” mindset
In 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, the Apostle Paul talks about being “all things to all people.” In the rest of the passage, he talks about different groups with whom he demonstrates this. While that passage is not an exhaustive guide to ministry, it provides significant insights into how to reach people for Jesus.
Based on studying this passage, and thinking of this in the ministry context of the Bible, I have five reflections over the past few weeks on what it is to be “all things to all people.” (more…)

Campus pastor fired for suggesting his campus leave Harvest Bible Chapel
Note: I’ve decided to write about this story again because it’s newsworthy within American Christendom. One of the largest and most influential churches in the country is in some very turbulent waters and, in my humble opinion, have made two major mistakes in less than a week.
Last week, it was announced that James MacDonald, founding pastor of Harvest Bible Chapel was taking an indefinite sabbatical. Harvest is a megachurch founded by MacDonald and has seven campuses in Chicago and one in Naples, Florida. In statements released by the church last week, Harvest’s elders and James MacDonald left the door open for him possibly preaching at the Naples campus during this sabbatical. (more…)
