Super Bowl commercial takes page from C.S. Lewis

In “The Four Loves,” scholar, author and renowned Christian apologist C.S. Lewis talks of the four words for love in the Greek language. During this year’s Super Bowl, New York Life, an insurance company borrowed that idea and gave a pretty good explanation of the four loves.

The commercial begins “the ancient Greeks had four words for love” and then goes onto explain:

Philia: the type of love among friends.

Storge: which refers to familial love.

Eros: Romantic love.

Agape: Agape love is meant to talk of an enduring love which exists regardless of circumstances. It’s a selfless love. It’s charity. It’s altruism. It’s love where it doesn’t necessarily benefit you.

Your church is not a restaurant: the customer service mentality and its danger to the American church

In America, where we have so many options with everything, every business with which we interact lives and dies on our satisfaction.

And we often treat churches in much the same way. Like it’s just another business that we’re patronizing. Where if you’re not happy with a church, if you decide you don’t like something about a church, it’s become so easy just to uproot and go to the next church.

It’s coming from a consumeristic mindset where we want the experience to revolve around us.

Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. It was on this day 75 years ago, Auschwitz Concentration Camp was liberated. More than 1 million people lost their lives at Auschwitz while millions more perished in the hundreds of other concentration camps run by the Nazis.

But tragically, on a day set apart to remember those who were lost, our world is increasingly forgetting about the holocaust.

NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his 13 year old daughter Giana, and seven others died in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California today.

I’ve been struck by the widespread response online.

Undoubtedly, it’s a tragedy that nine people died. But Bryant’s death has seemed to strike a cord with our society, even from people who aren’t basketball fans (or sports fans).

With the recently launched Disney+, I’ve been rewatching many of the classic Disney movies from my childhood.

I was struck by how many gospel themes are found in the Little Mermaid.

The longing of the human soul

Ariel has it all. She’s a princess, she lives in a palace. she’s beautiful, she has an amazing singing voice, great friends, she’s adored. Yet what she really wants is a world that’s above (literally).

Danny Holmes, Jr. committee a murder in 2016. A few days later, he was arrested for his crime. Last week, Holmes went on trial and plead guilty to his crime.

In a 20 minute speech before a Tennessee court, Holmes talked of finding faith while behind bars and the conviction that he needed to confess to his crime.

He’ll now serve the rest of his life in prison, a consequence that Holmes says he deserves for his crime.
