Infant in iconic photo would have turned 18 today; story behind the picture
As the old saying goes, “a picture is worth a thousand words.” But it seems that each generation has only a handful of pictures which capture the essence of major events. This photo of a firefighter cradling a baby in the aftermath of the Oklahoma City Bombing is one of the most famous photographs taken during the 1990s. The baby is a symbol for those who were lost in the tragic attack. She is a symbol of innocence, venerability, and woundedness. The firefighter is a symbol for American society. Immortalized with his expression are the concern and mourning of the people and a desire to rush to the aid of those in need. (more…) -

Titanic: why it still fascinates us 100 years later
As most people know, on this night, exactly a century ago, the Titanic sank.
Over the past few weeks, as the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s maiden voyage and subsequent sinking have approached, there have been countless articles, documentaries, and news stories. James Cameron’s epic film “Titanic” was re-released in 3D. After a century, the ill fated ship is a story which still fascinates me, and so many others. But in the weeks leading up to this infamous anniversary, one question has continually returned to the forefront of my thoughts.

The American Gospel and the meaning of Easter

Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons Statistically, we know that the vast majority of Americans believe in some form of a higher power. There are relatively few who are atheists. Since people do believe that there is something, and since it’s so easy to think of the majority of Americans as Christians, many simply attach themselves to Christianity.
But what does it mean? Christianity?
For so many, we call ourselves Christians but then never pray, or read the Bible, or go to church, or experience fellowship with other believers, or show any actual desire to have a relationship with Jesus. Without these, how can a person be Christian?

7 songs I’m ashamed to admit I secretly love (considering that I’m a man)
The Wanted.
They are an English boy band who has a new song (video above) called “Glad You Came.”
Now – I’m obviously not in their target demographic, but I absolutely love this song. I listen to it multiple times a day.
It got me to thinking: as embarrassing as this song is for me to like, it’s really not even the MOST embarrassing “guilty pleasure” song that I have. We all have songs like this.
#7 – Because The Night – Patti Smith
If there’s one redeeming quality to this song it’s that it was actually co-written by Bruce Springsteen.
Springsteen had recorded the song early in his career, but it was not included on his album “Darkness on the Edge of Town.” The album’s producer was also producing an album for Patti Smith. She also recorded the song, included it on her album, and it has been her most enduring single. (more…)
