I have been critical of the way in which Ohio State handled the tatoo scandal, and I said that Tressel needed to resign a month before he actually did it, so I’m not one to give the Bucks a free pass. That being said, I feel that giving the team a bowl ban for next season is an excessive penalty. The guilty players were caught while still in school and were severely punished for what they did.

The death of Chris Hitchens
Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons I was very saddened to learn this morning of the death of the great writer Christopher Hitchens. For over a year, I had paid close attention to his battle with cancer, knowing all along that it was going to be a fight which he would ultimately lose. The end came yesterday for the 62 year old Hitchens. In this day and age, that seems young. He had hundreds of thousands more words left to be written, but it was not meant to be.
He was a brilliant man and a wonderful writer. I certainly didn’t agree with everything Hitchens said (most notably, his outspoken atheism), but I respected his mind. Even when I disagreed with what he said, Hitchens forced you to evaluate your beliefs, a gift that so few writers have.
In the chasm created by the death of Hitchens, the world has one less intellectual giant, but his writing will live on forever. While he did not have the benefit of long life, the prolific volume of his work was that which the average person could not have produced in several lifetimes.

Why both parties are so useless when it comes to fixing the economy
Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons Throughout the last several weeks, I see a constant stream of news stories about the state of the economy of various European countries. The whole continent is in a crisis with over a dozen countries on the brink of having their credit ratings lowered. Cities all over the United States and across the world have had the highly publicized Occupy protests.
Here in America, in the coming years, government programs such as social security, health care, welfare, and a host of others are going to continue to cost this country trillions of dollars that we do not have.
With the Occupy protests, one of the significant beliefs is that the rich need to be paying more in taxes. (more…)

Why Robert Griffin’s Heisman was obscure, unlikely, historic
On Saturday night, Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III was awarded the 77th annual Heisman Trophy. Griffin’s win was an historical anomaly, and there were a number of unique factors which led to Griffin being the ultimate winner of the award.
My purpose is not to say whether or not Griffin was the most deserving player. I am attempting to show why Griffin’s win was a once in a generation type of event.

Why I wish that 104.9 the River would stop playing Christmas music!
Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons 104.9 The River is an FM radio station in Columbus that plays contemporary Christian music. It is focused on being uplifting, encouraging, and family friendly. I like the station, and I appreciate what they do.
