March Madness 2014 – My bracket
I know it could be said of any year’s tournament, but this season’s field is wide open. It’s interesting how many people have picked Michigan State and Louisville in the Final Four, both as 4 seeds.

Of the 1 seeds, Florida seems to be the most complete team. While Wichita State made a great run to the Final Four last year, they have played a horrible schedule this year. That’s not to say that they’re not good, but they’re not going to surprise anyone this year. They have a potentially tough second round matchup with Kentucky. While Kentucky has struggled this year, they’re an extremely talented team. (more…)

Ohio State – Miami: 10 years later
It’s probably the best BCS bowl game ever played. It might be the best game of the last decade. For football fans, it should even rank among the best games of all time.

For me, it is THE greatest game ever. And it will always be the greatest. No game will ever compare. No game will ever be as special. If it had been in the regular season, it would have been a great game, but it was so much bigger than that. It wasn’t just a great game, it was a great national championship. The only way a game could compete would be if it were of the same magnitude. Such a perfect match up of David and Goliath. And it was the first Ohio State championship in my lifetime. No matter how many championships I see, the first one will always be special. Dramatic. Compelling. Suspenseful. It was a game that had everything. It was a decade ago today but I remember that Friday evening as if it were yesterday. (more…)

Bielema to Arkansas: poor career choice?
It has been announced today that Bret Bielema is the next head football coach at the University of Arkansas.

I did not see that one coming.

For Bielema, from a football perspective, I feel that this move makes no sense. He has led the Badgers to three consecutive Rose Bowls and has led a respectable program. With Penn State irrelevant due to NCAA sanctions, the only major competition in the near future in Wisconsin’s division is Ohio State. (more…)

The one game season: and OSU football 2012
Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

I’ve never made excuses for Ohio State’s rules violations in 2010. Tressel needed to be out when everything came to light. The players who broke the rules were allowed to play in the 2011 Sugar Bowl after it had been known that they had sold memorabilia. Their suspensions were moved to the beginning ofthe 2011 season. Some of the players had suspensions increased for additional violations. Terrelle Pryor left the program. For the other players, they served their suspensions and returned to the field. They were able to play in last year’s bowl against Florida. (more…)

The NFL, human nature, and theology
Like so many others, I was watching football last night when what clearly appeared to be an interception was ruled a touchdown. The handling of the situation was an utter debacle. Referees who were out of position hesitating to make conflicting calls before declaring that it was a touchdown. it decided the outcome of the game and the officials got it wrong.

Among football fans, on blogs, and through social media, there has been outrage that this could happen.

Why?

Because it wasn’t fair. The right thing didn’t happen. (more…)
