I have been critical of the way in which Ohio State handled the tatoo scandal, and I said that Tressel needed to resign a month before he actually did it, so I’m not one to give the Bucks a free pass. That being said, I feel that giving the team a bowl ban for next season is an excessive penalty. The guilty players were caught while still in school and were severely punished for what they did.

The death of Chris Hitchens
Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative Commons I was very saddened to learn this morning of the death of the great writer Christopher Hitchens. For over a year, I had paid close attention to his battle with cancer, knowing all along that it was going to be a fight which he would ultimately lose. The end came yesterday for the 62 year old Hitchens. In this day and age, that seems young. He had hundreds of thousands more words left to be written, but it was not meant to be.
He was a brilliant man and a wonderful writer. I certainly didn’t agree with everything Hitchens said (most notably, his outspoken atheism), but I respected his mind. Even when I disagreed with what he said, Hitchens forced you to evaluate your beliefs, a gift that so few writers have.
In the chasm created by the death of Hitchens, the world has one less intellectual giant, but his writing will live on forever. While he did not have the benefit of long life, the prolific volume of his work was that which the average person could not have produced in several lifetimes.

After careful consideration, I think all other sports stories pale in comparison to what we have seen over the last week and a half.

Paterno Fired. Society Needs to do more in these situations than sit back and feel angry
Photo Courtesy of Flickr Creative CommonsI’ve read the Grand Jury report on the indictment for former Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. I’ve spent a great deal of time over the past few days thinking about what has happened and the darkness of the entire situation. I’m torn on how things with Paterno should have been handled. This evening it’s being reported that he has been fired by the Penn State Board of Trustees.
Given what has happened, I guess that was inevitable.
But regardless of what has happened, one thing remains certain:
Abuse continues. In every city, in every state, every day, abuse and molestation happens.
